Correction, Corrective Action and Preventive Action
Correction
Correction is defined as any action which is undertaken to eliminate a detected nonconformity. It is actually analogous to first aid in case of accidents. It is a set comprising of intellectual activities which are to be performed to eliminate non-conformity and lessen its impacts in a system.
Corrective action
Corrective action is a problem-solving process and consists of a set of activities that target the root cause of an existing non-conformity and prevent such types of events from occurring again in future. According to ISO definition, corrective action is a series of steps which are undertaken in order to eliminate the causes of a detected nonconformity or any undesirable situation.
Preventive action
According to ISO definition, preventive action is a series of intellectual activities which serve to eliminate the causes of potential nonconformities and potential situations which are undesirable in any way. It is analogous to risk management and involves anticipation and analysis of potential non-conformities or undesirable events which have not occurred yet. In addition to that, it also consists of an analysis of possible mitigation measures of those non-conformities or situations. It is always a good practice to anticipate and analyze the possible non-conformities or risks in a system. By doing so, the necessary preventive and precaution measures can be taken that helps us to avoid any undesirable situation in future.
