Comparison of HVDC And HVAC Transmission
Comparison of HVAC line and HVDC line based on the advantages and dis-advantages is discussed on this topic.
Summary
Comparison of HVAC line and HVDC line based on the advantages and dis-advantages is discussed on this topic.
Things to Remember
1) HVDC need less conductor than HVAC. But due to the high cost of converter associated with HVDC, HVDC transmission is only economical for long range transmission.
2) It doesn’t have stability problem and synchronizing problem. Thus, they can be operated from the High voltage a.c of different frequency.

Advantages
1 )HVDC need less conductor than HVAC. But due to the high cost of converter associated with HVDC, HVDC transmission is only economical for long range transmission.
2) HVDC lines can be built as a monopolar line with a ground return in the initial stage but may be converted to the bipolar line on a later date when load requirement increases.
3) No skin effect ane less corona loss is associated with HVDC transmission line.
4) It doesn’t have stability problem and synchronizing problem. Thus, they can be operated from the High voltage a.c of different frequency.
5) It also minimizes the land use impact.
Disadvantages
1) Converter station is very expensive.
2)Due to the process of conversion from a.c to d.c or d.c to ac, the appropriate filter must be designed and installed in suitable place in order to eliminate the harmonics which thus increases the system cost but increases the efficiency of the system.
