Summary

This topic focuses on the working principle of three phase to single phase converter and its description is provided. Along with it, the mathematical formulae of maximum average and rms value is provided.

Things to Remember

 1) In three phase to single phase cyclo-converter, One three phase controlled converter works as P-Converter and another works as N-Converter.The positive converter operates for the half of the time period of output frequency and negative converter operates for the remaining half time.period.

2)The maximum average voltage of a segment (αp = 0) is equal to the peak value of output voltage is

Vp= (2√2 Vs)/π = √2 Vo

 Thus, the rms value of output voltage at that condition is

Vo = 2Vp

In this converter, two three-phase controlled converters are connected across the load as shown in the figure below. One three phase controlled converter works as P-Converter and another works as N-Converter.The positive converter operates for the half of the time period of output frequency and negative converter operates for the remaining half time.period. The non-circulating current mode of operation will be described below, where only one converter − P-Converter or N-converter, conducts at a time, but both converters do not conduct at the same time.

Lets review a little about the operation of three phase controlled converter(for detail refer this topic). The thyristor is grouped into two groups i.e one from the upper half of the three-phase rectifier and another from the lower half of the three phase rectifier]. So, at a time two thyristor operates among 6 thyristors. And each thyristor conducts for 120o of conduction and thus, a total combination of 6 different pairs of the thyristor is available for the operation of three phase controlled converter. Hence, the ripple frequency is 6 times of input voltage or current frequency.In the same way, N-Converter also operates.

Thus, a positive and negative voltage appear across the load. The frequency of output voltage is less than that of the input voltage.A large number of harmonics is introduced in the output waveform and for the reduction of the harmonics the firing angle of P-Converter is changed initially form 90 degree to 0 degrees and again to 90 degrees[for more knowledge on this topic, refer www.nptel.ac.in/courses/108105066]. And the same thumb of rule applies for the n-converter.

The maximum average voltage of a segment (αp = 0) is equal to the peak value of output voltage is

Vp= (2√2 Vs)/π = √2 Vo

Thus, the rms value of output voltage at that condition is

Vo = 2Vp
