United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)
United Nation World Tourism Organization(UNWTO):
UNWTO is the widely recognized and leading international organization in the field of travel and tourism. It is a specialized agency of the United Nation. It serves as a globel forum for tourism policy issues and practical souces of tourism know-how. In 1976, UNWTO became on executing agency of the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP). The fundamental aim of the organization are defined in aricles three of the statute which are as follows:
- The fundamental aim of the organization shall be the promotion and development of tourism wit a new to contributing to economic developmet, international understanding, observance of human and fundamentals freedoms.
- In persuing this aim, the organization shall play particular attention to the interest of the developing countrie in the field of tourism.
- IN order to establish its central role in the field of tourism, the organization shall establish and maintain effective collaboration with appropriate organs of the UN and its specialized agencies. In this connection the organization shall seek a cooperate relationship with the an participation in the activities of the United Nations Development Programme, as participating and executing agencies.
Memberships Of UNWTO:
UNWTO has three categories of memebers which has been mentioned as follows:
- Full Members:
Full members respresent the government of the services states. Full members are 150 countries in 2006. A membership fees for full memebers is calculated on the basis of the level of economic development and its importance of tourism.
- Associate Members:
Associate members represent territories or a group of territories which are not responsible for their enternal relations but whose membership is approved by the state that assumes responsibility for the external relations of these territories.
- Affiliate Members:
They represent the industry segments and their associations whose activities are related to the aims of UNWTO or fall within purview. The affiliate membership of WTO at present is more than 300.
Organozational Structure Of UNWTO:
The organizational structure of WTO includes:
- The General Assembly:
The General Assembly of UNWTO is the supreme organ of the organization. It is the principle gathering of WTO. It meets every two years to approve budget and prgramme of work and to debate topics of vital importance to the tourism sector.
- The Excutive Council:
It is responsible for the implementation of its own decisions and the recommendations the General Assembly in consultation with the Secretory General. The council meets at least twice a year. The Council functions through a number of commities as listed below:
- The Program Committee
- The Committee on Budget and Finance
- The Committee on Statistic and Macro-economic Analysis Of Tourism
- The Committee on Market Intelligence and Promotion
- The Sustainable Development of Tourism Committee
- The Quality Support and Trade Committee, The UNWTO education Council
- The UNWTO business council
- The World Committee on Tourism Ethics.
- The Secretariat:
It consists of the Secretary General, Deputy Secretory General (S) , and a number of technical and non-technical officer and staff-Secretary General Francesco Frangialli of France, who supervise about 90 full-time staff at UNWTO’s Medrid Headquaters, leads the Secretariat. These officials are responsible for implementing UNWTO’s programme if work and serving the needs of members. The official language of UNWTO are English, Spanish, French and Arabic.
- The Regional Commissions:
They are the subsidiary organs of the General Assembly and each of them meet once a year. Affiliate members from the region participate as observers. They enable member states to maintain states to maintain contact with one another and with the secretariat between sessions of General Assembly. Each commission elects one chairman and two vice-chairman from among its members for a term assembly. The six commissions are as follow:
- Commission for Africa
- Commission for Europe
- Commission for East Africa and The Pacific
- Commission for South Asia
- Commission for the Middle East
- Commission for the America
Role Of UNWTO:
IT plays very important role to develop the tourism throughout the wprld. It has brought many international agencies such as travel agent, tour operations, airlines and hoteliers etc. Its aim is to stimulate and coordinate the tourism activities for the tourism development. With its headquarters in Madrid Spain the UNWTO plays a central and decrisive role in promoting the development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. The UNWTO plays a catalytic role in promoting technology transfers and international cooperate, in stimulating and developing public-private sector partnership in encouraging the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism with a view to ensuring that member countries, tourist destinations and business maximize the positive economic, social and cultural effects of tourism and fully reapits benefits, while minimizing its negative social and environmentalimpacts.
The fundamental aim of the organization is the promotion and development of tourism with a view of contributing to economic development, international understanding, peace prosperity. It has paid particular attention to the interest of the developing countries in the fied of tourism, the organization has established
