The personalities we present here were not born as eminent personalities of hotel industry but they made themselves what they became with hard work and solid determination.

Ellsworth M Statler is an American national who initiated the concept of chain hotels during 1920s. Most of his childhood days he had to work because of his financially poor background. When he was 13 he got the job of Bell Boy in hotel Wheeling. He studied Hotel Management while he was doing the job of the hotel clerk. Within a few years, he was running his own lunch room and billiard hall in Wheeling. After that, he took over restaurants at the Ellicott Square Building. In 1901 he built his first hotel a temporary hotel of 2,100 rooms, near the expositions ground. After its success in the same year, he built another hotel "The Sattler Hotel" in Buffalo and that hotel was soon expanded into a chain of hotels in many countries. The slogan of his hotel was "The customer is always right" and he took pains to provide for comfort and convenience in his hotels. By the mid-1920s the Statler hotel properties were the largest in the nation owned by a single individual. In 1927 he opened his last hotel, in Boston.

Delmonico Brothers

They were the immigrants from Switzerland, in the year 1827 AD, who were said to have opened the first restaurant in the form of the pastry shop and café in New York City. People started liking the taste of new eaters which made the brothers open better restaurants next year. These two persons that are the " Delmonico Brothers" were the first one who brought up the concept of restaurants.

Kemmon Wilson, the founder of Holiday Inns, was a high school drop out and a former popcorn vendor before he entered the hospitality field. Wilson grew up during a great depression and was forced to leave high school; when his widowed mother lost her job. The enterprising youth acquired a popcorn vending machine on installments and rented space in the lobby of the local theatre. His business extended and rewarded him with good profit. Wilson reinvested his profits in a variety of vending machines, eventually acquiring a house, a jukebox distributorship and several theatres of his own.

After serving in the airport transport command during world war 2, Wilson failed with a soft drink contract before finally succeeding in a construction trade. In 1951, driving with his family on vacation from Tennessee to Washington D.C, he displeased at his inability to find even a single motor inn with good sanitation and comfortable accommodation suitable for vacationing family. Soon afterward, Wilson opened his own hotel outside just outside the Memphis. Catering to vacationing families, Wilson called his new establishment the Holiday Inn after, 1942.

In sharp contrast to other motor inns of the early 1950s, the holiday inn included ample parking, televisions, phones, swimming pools for guest and soft drink dispensers. Over the next few years , Wilson built three more hotels and with an entrepreneur named Wallace Johnson, began franchising Holiday inn to a national level.

By 1959, the chain boasted a hundred hotels, most owned by doctors, lawyers, and other financially capable investors. Wilson retired as chief executive in the franchise chain in 1979, after suffering a mild heart attack. Holiday Inns is still the world largest lodging organization and one of the most recognizable franchise trademarks. It is estimated that 90 percent of nation travelers spend at least one night in Holiday Inn. Holiday Inn has become one of the famous Inn of the whole world.

Conrad Hilton was born on December 25, 1887, in San Antonio, New Mexico. Hilton attended St. Michael`s College and New Mexico school of mines. He graduated in 1909. As a youth, he met late -night trains stopping in San Antonio and escorted passengers to his father farmhouse, where there was five rooms set aside for the guests. The room rate was a dollar per night, including the meals.

Following a short period of business with his father; the twenty-five years old Conrad went to work as a cashier in the New Mexico state bank in San Antonio and eventually became the President of the Bank. He served as a second lieutenant in World War 1 (one). In 1919, Hilton went to cisco, texas, with the intention of buying the bank. Instead, he ended up buying a hotel, The Mobley, which became the cornerstone of the Hilton hotel empire. In 1925, he set out to build a new hotel in Dallas but ran out of money before construction was completed. When the project was finished, Hilton operated the establishment under a lease contract.

When the depression struck, he had already acquired a modest chain of eight hotels in the Southwest. In a period more than 80 percent of the nation`s hotels went into bankruptcy, Hilton managed to hold on to five of his hotels by using profit from his oil lease investments. In 1939, Hilton began building new hotels , while setting out to acquire the most famous examples of America`s "Golden Age of Hotels". In 1942 he acquired the town house in Loss Angles and, a year later; the Roosevelt and the Plaza hotels in New York City. He achieved his plan by taking over the palmer house in Chicago and in 1949 Conard Hilton achieved his life long ambition of owning the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City.

In 1946, he organized his chain of the lodging establishment as the Hilton Hotel Corporation and in the succeeding years built luxury hotels around the hotels around the world under the Hilton name. In 1954, he acquired controlling interest of his primary competitor; the Sattler hotel chain, for 111 million dollars. He turned over the management reins to his son, Barron Hilton, in 1996, staying as chairman of the board. Conrad Hilton`s autobiography, " BE MY GUEST", was published in 1957. He died in 1079 at the age of 21.
