Things to Remember

 • Mucor is a hyphal fungus body structure consists of a fine thin thread like tubular branch cotony mass of mycelium.
 • Unit structure of mycelium is hyphae.
 • Mucor is a saprophytic fungus which grows in dead and decaying organic matters like moist bread, jam, jelly, pickle etc and also in the soil very rich in humus.
 • The prostrate hypha is horizontally growing unsubstratum.
 • An aerial hypha is erect hypha developing from prostrate hypha.

Subjective Questions

Q1:

Define pure substance.

Type: Short Difficulty: Easy

Show/Hide Answer
Answer:
A system is said to be composed of pure substance if it is

(i) homogeneous in composition

(ii) homogeneous in chemical aggregation

(iii) invariable in chemical aggregation

Q2:

State and explain "State Postulate".

Type: Short Difficulty: Easy

Show/Hide Answer
Answer:
State postulate states that, "Two independent thermodynaimic property are sufficient to establish a stable thermodynamic state of a state of a system composed of a pure substance." For example to determine temperature T if its pressure P and volume V are given i.e. T = T(P, V).

State postulate can also be stated in terms of intensive properties as, Two independent intensive thermodynamic properties are sufficient to establish a stable thermodynamic state of pure substance. For example to determine temperature T if its pressure P and specific volume v are given i.e. T = T(P, v).

Mucor - Part of hypha showing detailed structure and Mycelium of Mucor with Sporangiophore

Types of Hypha

Prostrate Hypha

A prostrate hypha is horizontally growing unsubstratum. They absorb nutrition from the substratum.

Sub-terranean Hypha

They are more branched and deeply penetrating prostrate hypha. They also absorb nutrition from the substratum.

Aerial Hypha

Aerial hypha is erect hypha developing from prostrate hypha. They are also called as sporangiophore which bears sporangium at its tip.
