Population

Population means an organised form of people living together in a certain place having certain social norms and values.

Position of world population

The population of the world before Christ was 25 million at that time 15 million were engaged in agriculture. In 1659 AD population increased to 59 million. Likewise in 1850 AD-1 billion, in 1930 AD-2 billion, in 1975 AD- 4 billion, in 1998 AD about 6 billion and at present 7 billion.

Distribution of population means a total number of people living in different geographical regions.in

It also has its own importance. They are as follows:

• It helps to carry out different plannings for the development of the different geographical sector.
• It helps to distribute available means and resources.
• It helps for proportional development.
• It helps to uplift the economic status of the people living in different geographical sectors.

Reasons for having less population in Far development region:

• Difficult land topography
• Lack of plain and fertile land
• Less rainfall
• Lack of transportation and communication
• Lack of job opportunities
• Lack of industrial development

Population distribution and growth rate by ecological regions

The population growth rate for mountain and hill has increased and it has slightly reserved for Terai. The population growth rate for the Terai in 2011 BS was 1.72 %. The mountain and hilly regions have lower PGR than the Terai region. The high growth of population in the Terai region is due to the migration from mountain, hill and flow of immigrant from the neighbouring countries.

Population distribution and growth rate by development regions:

The population is unevenly distributed according to geographical region. Mountain region contains 35% of the land, although the population is only 7.5%. In the hilly region, the population is 45%, though its area is 42%, and in the Terai region, it has only 23% land but the population is 46%.

Population density

An average number of people living per square kilometre is called population density.

Population density is calculated by the following formula:
Population density = population/area per sq. km.

Population density differs because of:

• Formation of land and climate.
• An Economic and social environment like education, transport, communication, industries etc.

Benefit of measuring population density

• It helps to make appropriate plans and policies for the development of a country.
• It helps to distribute available means and resources.
• It helps for proportional development.
• It helps to develop infrastructural facilities.
