Dashain
‘Durga Puja’ is the greatest festival of Hindus. It falls during the month of September. It is observed for 15 days and during these days people try to forget all their anxieties and enemities and they bow their heads to establish peace and harmony in front of goddess Durga.
On the first day, special kind of flower is planted on a sacred place which is brought from the river. People start to worship Goddess Durga from the same day. Goddess Durga is the symbol of power. Seventh day is an important day because ‘Phoolpathi’ is brought from Gorkha to Hanuman Dhoka. On the same day guns are fired in Tudikhel. The eighth day is called ‘Maha Asthami’ and from this day, different animals are sacrificed. On the ninth day, a great feast is organized in each and every house because everywhere according to their own capacity, a special feast is organized. Tenth day is important as special kid of ‘Tika’ is presented and accepted as blessing from elders, seniors. The day is marked for love and affections. Gifts are presented while going to accept ‘Tika’. People engage in merry making and wear new dresses and garments.
About ‘Durga Puja’ people have different stories. It is said that ‘Durga Bhawani’ killed once demon named ‘Mahisashur’. On the tenth day of Dashain, it is also said during the truth age king Ram killed Ravan and to mark victory over him the day is celebrated. Whatever stories are there, it’s important to maintain peace and harmony in the society.
Children are fond of celebrating puja and they have precious moments but from economic point of view, people are forced to borrow money to celebrate Dashain. After festival, they live in rief and sorrow as they find themselves in debt. Seniors play cards, take alcohol, which affects society very much. During the festival, economic burden for the people can be seen, which is curse to the people.
Finally, ‘Durga Puja’ is the most important festival of Hindus. People forget all their anxieties, troubles and try to bring peace and harmony in society. It is the festival to renew relations, to exchange happiness, which should be encouraged.
